Under Armour

The second biggest, sports apparel company in the US. That’s Under Armour. While most of the largest contemporary sports and fitness producers have their roots back in the first half of the 20th century , Under Armour was founded quite recently, back in the 90’s.

Kevin Plank hated being sweaty in his T-shirt while playing football. As a captain of a football team, he was facing this problem every time he got in the game. But the urgency to solve this one, tiny problem stood behind the future establishment of Under Armour company as we know it now.

Instead of making T-shirts that would soak sweat, he made a few prototypes that were so thin, that the sweat would finally vaporize faster than any other fabrics.  With this basic idea he started Under Armour in 1996. In less than 10 years, the company’s total revenue grew up to almost 300 million dollar. In 2019, the company’s annual revenue accounted US$4.977 billion in total.

An interesting fact is that the company not only focuses on sports apparel, such as running shoes, clothing and other equipment. But it also expanded into tech field. For instance, it acquired running app Endomondo or develops its onw app Map my fitness. Unfortunately, the company decided to stop supporting the earlier and sold the latter recently.
