Hoka One One Clifton 8: A Comprehensive Review from Indonesia

Bali’s humid air wrapped around me as I laced the Hoka One One Clifton 8 for the first time. The rainy season had begun, and I knew these shoes would have to manage more than just paved municipal roads. My idea was straightforward: test them on the busy streets of Ubud, bring them along beach jogs in Seminyak, and then challenge them to their limits by hiking across Komodo National Park.

This would be a genuine test of durability, grip, and general performance with the tropical storms pouring in. Having heard enough about the lightweight construction and cushioning ride of the Clifton 8, I had great expectations. Still, given the erratic circumstances of Indonesia, how would they fare? Could they be authentic all-purpose shoes, managing daily runs and unplanned adventures? The solution was evident when I arrived on Komodo’s steep paths.

First Impressions: Design and Aesthetics

The Clifton 8 initially seems not to scream showy. Its clean, modern appearance features a designed mesh top that combines structure and airflow. The shoe comes in many colors. Thus, it is simple to get a pair that suits your taste. The shoes hold firm, even after miles of running; the soft padding around the heel collar and tongue offers a comfortable fit free from irritation.

It is more fitting for various foot types since the general form is broader than certain running shoes. Even before you start to walk, the low weight is clearly evident. Holding the shoe in my hand, it seemed almost too light to be as robust as Hoka says. But thrilled to discover that the Clifton 8 is designed for performance rather than only looks, I ran over the hot streets of Bali and splashed across Komodo puddles.

Midsole Performance: Cushioning and Responsiveness

The Clifton 8 does a good job if you want a shoe that makes long-distance runs seem easy. Absuming pressure on city pavement and uneven paths, the EVA foam midsole’s soft, cushioned ride does not offer the same bounce or springiness as models such as the Asics Gel-Kayano 30. The Clifton 8 feels a little flatter and more neutral, while the Gel-Kayano 30 offers a more significant midsole that improves energy return.

This could benefit those who want a more grounded ride, but you could find the midsole inadequate if you wish to have more propulsion on your runs. Shorter distances call for the Clifton 8 to be practical. It is not overly heavy and gives enough padding to keep your feet comfortable. After longer runs over ten miles, though, I started to find that the midsole lacked the same longevity as other long-distance running shoes. Although it’s still a great everyday trainer, folks who require more help for marathon preparation might not be the best fit for it.

Comparison with the Adidas Solar Glide ST

These are observed key differences:

Midsole and Impact Absorption

For runners who wish more push-off, the Boost midsole of the Adidas Solar Glide ST offers exceptional energy return and a somewhat stronger ride. On the joints, the softer and more cushioned ride of the Hoka Clifton 8 feels fantastic; unfortunately, it lacks the same reactivity.

Long-distance running with support

The Solar Glide ST provides a firm heel counter and medial support for long-distance runners, therefore enabling overpronators to retain stability. Although comfortable, the Clifton 8‘s neutral shape makes it less helpful for runners requiring organized assistance.

Durability and Longevity

The Clifton 8‘s lightweight materials help provide its feather-light feel, but they wear down more quickly under heavy training. For high-mileage runners, the Solar Glide ST is the more durable choice with extended outsole rubber coverage.

Versatility and Comfort

Perfect for casual runs, vacation, or quick treks, the Clifton 8 shines in comfort and breathability. For structured training, the Solar Glide ST is perfect even if it feels heavier since it offers more support and framework.

Traction and Performance in Wet Conditions

Running in Bali’s wet season, the Clifton 8’s outsole fared rather well but needed deep tread for best traction. ContinentalTM Rubber used in the Solar Glide ST provides far improved traction on slick and wet areas.

Gym and Training Suitability

For gym visits, both shoes work nicely. While the Solar Glide ST‘s solid foundation is preferable for weightlifting and stability-based training, the Clifton 8’s lightweight construction makes it excellent for treadmill sprints and dynamic motions.

Outsole Durability and Traction

Running around Bali’s wet streets, I soon discovered the outsole of the Clifton 8 works well on damp ground. While the rubber zones in high-wear regions offer good traction, the shoe is not designed for technical trails. The grip wavered when I walked across Komodo National Park’s uneven trails. For trail running or rainy, muddy excursions, I would not advise it, even if road running and gym sessions are quite OK. Although the outsole is not aggressive, you might want to pick a hybrid model with improved grip if you intend to blend road and trail running.

What I Loved (and Didn’t Love) About the Clifton 8

Hoka One One Clifton 8

The Clifton 8’s weight on your feet is among its better features. Perfect for casual runners and others looking for a comfortable, go-to shoe, this daily trainer doesn’t weigh you down. The soft and forgiving cushioning makes joint movement easy; the ventilated top guarantees that your feet remain comfortable even in the tropical heat of Indonesia. I did, however, discover several negatives.

Although cushioned, the midsole loses energy return over longer runs. If you intend to push it beyond its intended use, it is also not the most robust choice. The Asics Gel-Kayano 30 would be better for a runner seeking a more supporting shoe. Furthermore, it is less flexible for off-road activities, and the outsole lacks the aggressiveness needed for major trail running.
